The self-unloading vessel was invented on the Great Lakes in 1908. The vessel pictured here is discharging coal in Marquette, Michigan. Self-unloading vessels are exactly what their name implies - the ship (or barge) can discharge its cargo without any need of shoreside personnel or equipment.
